How to pronounce Suydam?

Pronunciation of Suydam

Suydam is primarily classified as a surname (last name) and is pronounced as

Soo - dam
Originally an umlaut in middle Dutch, the name was an addition to Ryken in New Amsterdam as there were two Ryken (Ryker) families in the late 17th century (1600's). The sons of Mr Ryken took only the name Suydam (Südam) hence the name was born. Uy as in guy is incorrect and so uh as in bruh. Since the name comes from an older form of Dutch, it won't be pronounced like modern Dutch. There are other Americanized named with uy with the same problem. In Kuykendal the uy is pronounced 'ur'.

"The name comes from an early family in what is now New York. Originally settled in Manhatten then one of the earliest families on Long island there is a Suydam street in Brooklyn to this day. Modern Dutch pronounciations will not aid in pronouncing this name."
