The pronunciation "ay r ee n ee" makes this name Irene-ee, which is never correct! I read somewhere that there are actually two correct pronunciations for Irene--the one with the accent on the letter I and the one with the accent on the second syllable. That would make it either I-reen or i-REEN. I had a cousin Eileen whose family also did it both ways. To her mother she was always I-leen, while everyone else called her i-LEEN
