Pronunciation of Suydam
Soo - dam
Originally an umlaut in middle Dutch, the name was an addition to Ryken in New Amsterdam as there were two Ryken (Ryker) families in the late 17th century (1600's). The sons of Mr Ryken took only the name Suydam (Südam) hence the name was born. Uy as in guy is incorrect and so uh as in bruh. Since the name comes from an older form of Dutch, it won't be pronounced like modern Dutch. There are other Americanized named with uy with the same problem. In Kuykendal the uy is pronounced 'ur'.
