Pronunciation of Pegues in Louisiana, TX, AL, and we speak French
puh-Gaze
Phonetic Spelling:[ puh-Gaze ]
Type of Name:
French..southern France
Language:
French and Huguenot
Gender:
Male
Alternate Spelling(s):
Peguesse
Additional Information:
certainly not correct to say
"PEA- geeez" (accent on first syllable) the name is totally French and the only people that mispronounce "Pegues" as a family name are Black southern Americans who were mostly (not all) descendants of White Slave Owners/Plantation owners found in states such as Mississippi. There are many mulatto/quadroons descendants that "legitimately" possess the family name "Pegues".
Commonly, the name is pronounced "puh-GEEZ", or "puh-Gase", and even "pe-GAY" (accent grave on the last "e")..it is often written in FRANCE as P-E(with accent egu over the "e") - G-U-E-S. Also akin to "PEGUESSE" (as a family name) pronounced close to "pee-GUESS"....BUT NEVER CORRECTLY pronounced anything close to "PEA-GEEE" or " PEA-geeeeez"

Pronunciation of Pegues in Louisiana, Dallas County AL
puh-GAZE
Phonetic Spelling:[ puh-GAZE ]
Type of Name:
Last Name
Language:
French, Cajun (US)
Alternate Spelling(s):
Peguesse, Peguese
Meaning:
pitch
Additional Information:
The pronunciation inFrance(the origin) would correctly dictate, but like many immigrants to the US, sounds of syllables get changed and even abused through ignorance.Of course every "Smith Family" is not related (whether black, white or brown), every "Pegues Family" is not related either.If there are physically black-skinned "Pegues-named" people for instance in MS they adopted the Pegues plantation name, but there are several US-based examples of mulatto/quadroon actual descendants.The name is NEVER supposed to be pronounced "PIGGIES" which I've heard from so-called family in places like MS! The close sound is either "puh-Gaze", "puh-Geezz", or "pee-GAAYY" (FR, accent LAST syllable, not "PEEE-gay". Just because you're named something doesn't mean you know how a family name should be pronounced LOL
