Rumor tells me the name has something to do with the animal badger, but I have found nothing to support this. There are also similar French names that start with "baillar". I was told that my ancestor that came across from France to Canada was named Jean, but of course that's a really common name.

The name is French. I am not sure how this is pronounced in French, but in the USA I tell people to pronounce it how it's spelled, which is three words: "Bail" "Large" and "On".
