Type of Name:
Mountain range, region, a people
Language:
Cherokee
Additional Information:
It has been misconstrued for decades the correct pronunciation of the word Appalachian. People are incorrectly emphasizing the 3rd syllable as "lay" which gives it the long A sound. The word is a Native American word, which has NO long A's.
To remember the correct pronunciation, think of "Apple at cha" (I am going to throw an apple at cha (ya/you))
(Please note: I am an Appalachian scholar, along with hundreds of others and we are trying to reeducate the correct pronunciation as the former is an insult to the people)
