Type of Name  First Name
Gender  Female
Origin  French
Alternate Spelling(s)  DesirĂ©e
Meaning  To Desire
Additional Information  This name is properly spelled with an accent mark over the second "e", but in English, seeing as we don't use accent marks, it has been dropped. The letter "é" is pronounced like a long "a" in French. That gives it the "ray" sound. I have done a lot of research into the origin of my name (because I'm a nerd :) and I take French, so I know a lot about this. It is possible that someone with the name Desiree could use the "ree" sound at the end. It's really best to ask them. The way the name was originally meant to sound was with a "ray", however.

Pronunciation:  DES-ee-ray

Some people in the English-speaking world prefer to pronounce the two "E"s at the end as in "sEE", but the correct pronounciation of the last syllable in the original French word is more like the AY in the English word "rAY". "DES-ee-ray": accent is on the first syllable-- the "I" in French is a more open sound-- "ray". The French word does have an acute accent (accent aigu), which slopes down to the left, on the first of the last two "E"s. The French word "desirer" is the verb "to desire." Desiree is the female version of the adjective "desired", as in "desired one."

Pronunciation:  You pronounced it as 'd eh z - uh - r ai ' The 'ai' as in 'pain'. That is wrong. It should be just 'ee' as in 'sheep'. Like ''d eh z - uh - r ee ' I actually asked one Desiree the pronunciation of her name. :)
