I think the correct pronunciation is closer to ey-lee-s. The i isn't short like in "it," but long like in "elite." The ae also doesn't read ay, but more like ey (as in hay). I've seen it used in the movie "The Lion in Winter" (2003) for Aelis of France, and I think it makes more sense that way (knowing both languages).
